These series are getting better and better

This is the second book of the Widow’s Island Novella series. It wasn’t as thrilling as the first one, I started getting hyped up while reading the second half of the book as the story started becoming exciting. All in all, it is still good and it felt like watching season 2 of a detective works series.

The second novella in the Widow's Island series follows Tessa as she tries to solve the murder of a man found harpooned to a sign. It a delicate balance for her as she tries to solve the murder and care for her ailing mother.

I found myself diving into this one a lot easier than I did the first one, which could simply be down to I knew a little about the character and the setting. Tessa was an enjoyable lead who I'm eager to get to know a little bit more throughout the rest of the series. I think I liked Logan a little better than I did Henry, but I do wish the romance hadn't happened so quickly for them. These are short stories so I don't feel like it really had the chance to get developed properly.

As with the first one, the ending and solution was simple and wrapped up really quickly. There isn't a whole lot of suspense in it once it starts happening which is a downfall. But, overall, this series is an enjoyable read that I will continue to dive into.

A Bone to Pick is a quick, fun read, perfect when you need an easy, gripping mystery story for entertainment. Deputy Tessa Black responds to an evening call from Mrs. Driver who heard a blood curdling scream. With the other two deputies otherwise occupied, Tessa enlists the help of park ranger Logan Wild. Together, they find the body of artist and newcomer Dante Moreno harpooned against a warning sign on beach within the state park. Searching Dante’s house, they found $100,000 in cash--and a stash of portraits of nude women. With the limited resources of a small town and distracted by her mother’s Alzheimer's and her caretaking responsibilities, Tessa must figure out who killed Dante before anyone else--including herself--is put at risk.

Set on Widow’s Island, an isolated community in the Pacific Northwest, the novella is populated with quirky characters like Jerry, the aging hippy and owner of the local head shop, and Herb Lawson who played the oboe at the local bar every Thursday night. One of my favorite aspects was the Widow’s Knitting and Activist group led by Logan’s grandmother, Jane Sutton. Not only did the group know everything happening on the island and manage to solve most problems, they were the driving force for good in the community.

The Pacific Northwest offers a beautiful setting, and the isolation of the island heightens the suspense. The possible role of the nude portraits as a motive for the killing was an unusual and interesting touch. Additionally, the book emphasized the necessity of interconnection among residents when living in a rather hostile environment.

While I liked the mystery element, I wasn’t thrilled when it ended by having Tessa wrap up the loose ends through a recap provided to her friend, FBI agent Cate Wild, Logan’s sister. The romance subplot also rang a little hollow. Although the second in a series of novellas, I had not read the first and had no trouble understanding the characters or plot. However, I enjoyed A Bone to Pick enough that I preordered Close to the Bone, the first novella in the series, and will probably read #3 and 4, too.

Thank you to Netgalley and Montlake Romance for providing an advance reading copy in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the suspense in this novella, and I loved how Tessa kicked butt in this book too. Melinda always writes some kick-butt heroines in her stories.

Very good quick read

The second installment in this series is by Melinda Leigh and features Tessa Black who we met in the first novella. Tessa is a deputy dealing with her mothers decline into dementia as well as crime on the island. She has a case of a man murdered in a National Park on the island. She works with Park Ranger, Logan Wilde, who is the brother of Cate who as a main character in the first novella. I enjoyed the story and getting to know Tessa better and meeting Logan. They have great chemistry. I can't wait until the next novella is available. I found that I enjoyed this approach which is the same as the Rogue River novellas.

Love this series!

Great characters in a fantastic setting! The community feel of these books increases with each episode and that just feels good.
