After I saw a friend rejoice the Finnish translation of Starnone's Trick finally being available, I had to look up this author's work because I had never even heard of him...
The only book available at my library as a Kindle edition was Ties, so I quickly grabbed it without reading anything about it. Although there were definitely times when I thought, "Yup, this is... somehow very Italian," I otherwise forgot that I read an English translation of an Italian author's work. I'm only pointing that out because I have recently read nothing but books written in their original language, and this fit perfectly into that flow.
Jhumpa Lahiri's translation work is stellar, and her preface to the novel is wonderful (although I do admit I stopped reading it the first go-around when she continued past the translation work and started analyzing the novel more - I wanted to draw my own conclusions!).
Anyway. What is this novel about? Ties. It's such a simple title, yet it's everything. And that's sort of what the novel itself is, too. It's not supremely mind-blowing, but it made me stop multiple times to re-read passages just to enjoy the fresh descriptions of something almost mundane. I guess that leads to another point: it's about how innocently mundane something can seem, but there are dangers lurking in the corners of everyone's minds.
It was such a quick read, I gotta go find me more Starnone.
