Okay, so, let's be honest, I picked this up because the idea sounded great, a prince is going against the sexist ideas of what she should do, but the way it was realised was just really not good and boring. There was a bunch of references to popular tropes in fantasy, but it just fell flat and the main character being just a cliche of someone who is not like the others did not help at all. And the story about the prince in the end just showed off that the worldbuilding is really not good. This was a dissapointment.

This book is so good. I love the meta commentary Whitley does with the "girls outfits" and seeing all the Wonder Woman, Xena, babes in boob armor tropes laughed at and made fun of as so unrealistic was a blast. This is feel-good fun that has a lot of stinging barbs toward how women are treated in today's society that was greatly appreciated especially from a male author.
Recommends it for: Anyone who wants to smash the patriarchy. (And likes fun goofy dragons.)

Short and sweet. Pretty typical anti-"princess-as-helpless" narrative.
this was pretty good and funny I love that she just decided I don't need no stupid prince and just went and rode off on her dragon to go on an adventure
all in all a really cute and funny story that I look forward to reading more of

Funny, action-packed, and with a strong girl power story line. I really enjoyed this book!
LOVED this! So funny, fun, super inclusive and as a bonus there were hilarious easter eggs. Definitely recommended. :)
Exactly what I was looking for. A fun adventure where ladies save themselves.
This is a fun read for anyone who's ever thought princesses getting rescued is stupid. The main character is my kinda girl--intelligent, inquisitive, and capable. The rest of the cast is great too. There's an adorable dragon and a half-dwarf blacksmith girl with a giant hammer (and boy does she know how to swing that thing), and lots of character growth (but not in the serious boring kind of way). This should be required reading for all twelve year olds, everywhere.
(Oh, and there are fun nods to Wonder Woman, Xena, and other "woman warrior" cultural icons, too.)
