Book review: The Midnight Kingdom by Tara Sim 3 stars⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am so sorry to say this book is over 600 pages of middle book syndrom.
I gave The City of Dusk 4.75 stars last year and loved it! The worldbuilding was amazing, the character dynamics were really good and the dialogue too.

Where The City of Dusk ended with a boom (literally) and a cliffhanger: all our characters are being ripped to another place. This books started off meh.. and stayed that way.
Our main characters are being split up into: the realm of the dead, the realm of shadows, and the original city.
You would expect that if we are thrown into those different worlds there are high stakes and a lot of world building but it all felt flat.
I dont think anything interesting happened in those worlds nor was there character development.
There wasnt any banter as they are split up and meet new characters.. that I didnt care about.
The only story arc that intrigued me a bit was of the character in the original city who went on a diplomatic adventure to an Asian inspired country discovering and teaching more of her magic... but then why did we need the others and their part in those other worlds?
I am torn if I should pick up the last book or give up in general, will see when that time comes.

Very grateful for the ARC I truly expected to give this book 5 stars!

4/5

I didn’t like this as much as the first but it did carry on the plot, magical system, religious aspects and separate character storylines very well. I thought it was a good second book to this series and it kept in line with the first book.

All the characters had some semblance of growth in their personal journey. The religious aspects combined with the magical system is elite, there is so much lore that intertwines with their everyday world. There’s political assassinations, betrayal and deviance that I actually enjoyed so much.

The only thing I sort of was unimpressed with was the slow pacing at times. Some characters chapters were harder to get through because most of them were self loathing and woe is me in every single instance. It did take a longer time to work through but other characters made up for it with more action and moving forward.

It wasn’t as good as the first book, which I suspect this book fell to middle book syndrome. But I am definitely looking forward to the last book in this series.

I feel bamboozled because I thought the last book was already released but the released date got pushed back and now I have to wait to read the conclusion to this series!

This is a criminally unknown series considering how good it is. This book was slow paced but did everything it set out to do really well considering the amount of character POVs and plot lines. I think all the character/plot arcs were balanced really well and I loved being able to explore Noctus and Mortri.

Overall I like what happened with all the characters (except Taesia at the end) and I am very intrigued by Dante and his demon 👀. I’m looking forward to seeing how Julian being around is going to impact things. Just gotta wait until December lol.
