I loved this. Rarely do I read something that makes me stop and reflect (or maybe I'm just shallow...), but I found myself stopping at the end of every story to gnaw on it. And my bus is not always conducive to deep thought:)

A wonderful set of illustrated stories about the humorous and poignant moments of living in what Aussie author Shaun Tan calls outer suburbia. Straddling the line between magical realism and fantasy flat out, Tan's inventive artwork and colorful storytelling is a treat to read. It's like a picture book for young adults. I can't wait to read more of Tan's works.

As a former elementary school teacher and current media specialist, I highly recommend this book! What I love about all of Tan’s stories is that they don’t remind me of anyone else. His voice is uniquely beautiful and children recognize it. They are looking for books that illustrate their feelings, even when they don’t yet know how to organize and name them. The conversations this book inspires alone makes this a must read!

Tan could write novels; his prose is just as enjoyable as his illustrations are, and his work has more vivid anima on display than most can convey in thousands of words or hundreds of pages. I suspect he enjoys painting too much, which is not really a thing to be disappointed about.
