Flight 171 is a quick-paced thriller that takes place during a 4-hour plane ride with a group of high school students and a sinister, unearthly beast. Devon is still grieving the loss of her sister and trying to uncover who killed her when her senior class boards a plane to Denver for a ski trip. Shortly into the trip, a supernatural terror takes over the plane and gives the high schoolers an ultimatum - choose one person in their group to sacrifice before the end of the flight or the plane will crash, killing everyone.

I did rate this book based on my reading experience, however, though this thriller wasn't my favorite due to the semi-shallow plotlines, I feel confident in saying that teen readers will eat this book up. It has all the elements of an edge-of-your-seat thriller with a mystery that keeps you wondering almost to the end.

-made me feel like i did when i was a kid reading goosebumps books
-super quick and to the point - just like a good YA horror should be
-characters were written perfectly, just stupid teens being annoying
-all of their secrets were interesting, except the one that was supposed to be soOoOoOo bad - the MCs. it was lame as hell
-would love to see this as a movie
-would love to have this same book but rewritten without any supernatural elements

I have a laundry list of complaints. Spoilers because I'm not a monster (unlike the antagonist):

-I think the best mysteries are those where you either can't trust anyone or the seeds are so well planted that you never see it coming. This is neither of those
-Home girl says "Quick get your oxygen masks" when they haven't been deployed because *checks notes* oh, that's right, it's supernatural creature smoke
-I can't get over the way the old lady says (and I quote) "I am an immortal being without an immortal body, so I must possess other bodies in order to survive. Every creature has its limitations, even me. However, what I am is not nearly as important as what I need. Because giving it to me is the only way you and your friends will make it off this plane alive." Now, I'm going to give you a moment to reread that and process it. For context, all of the adults and non-students (this wasn't a private flight, the kids were in economy) are passed out. This evil old woman has stabbed someone in the chest with knitting needles. The question that sparked this response: "are you a demon?". This was on page 55. This was so pointless, cheesy, and ridiculous I couldn't take it seriously. It would've been more interesting to have the students find out what the thing is, not have it outright stated. And this gives absolutely no answer or context. How did the creature know that this was the plane to attack? What's so special about these kids from Pennsylvania?
-I cannot believe that these kids are saying that Devon saying nasty stuff to her sister before her death is worse than the guy who LITERALLY bashed his bully's knees in????
-When did Kiara find out Andrew killed Emily? This whole "threatening Devon's mom" plotline was a mess.
-Now I'm stressed over the ending. I don't want a part two, but I also need a part two.
