4.5 stars!
I listened to the audiobook.
I new I would enjoy this audiobook since I enjoyed the audiobook of The Hate U Give (THUG) so much. This story made me laugh and cry. It had me rooting for Maverick every step of the way. Seeing him has a father to little 7 was so heart warming. He was really struggling, but he continued to always try to make the right choices. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because the ending was a bit abrupt. I think if you didn't read THUG then you would be left wondering what happened after the last page, but of course you get these answers in THUG, so I knew these events were missing and was just a bit surprised it wasn't mentioned. Overall I think this book did a great jobs showing the struggles of a young father and the struggles of someone trying to find a better life for his family.

Another winner from Angie Thomas. What could have been a half-hearted, cash-grabbing prequel to one of the best young adult books of the last decade ends up being an insightful, nuanced, empathetic portrait of a young man struggling as he learns what it takes to be an adult. The challenges Maverick faces in this book are difficult for most twenty-somethings, let alone a seventeen-year-old trying to survive high school and gang violence. The recurrent message in Concrete Rose is that every person, no matter their struggles or exterior appearance, is someone’s child, someone’s parent, someone’s best friend. I’m hoping there are plenty more stories from Garden Heights on the way because they are a necessary force for good in the world.

I've read The Hate U Give so long ago, that I don't remember the link in between both book except that Maverick Is Starr dad.

Always nice to go back. The Hate U Give was the better, but still a nice book.

*CW: gang violence, murder, drugs, death of a loved one, incarcerated parent

I KNEW I WAS GOING TO LOVE THIS ONE AND I DID OMG THAT LAST LINE JUST HIT ME IN THE FEELS

I was reading just a sampler of this book but I couldn't finish it because it got too sexual for me. I know that there are lots of teens who can relate to Maverick and his story but that person just isn't me. Thank you NetGalley for providing me with this sample it my first time reading through this site and hopefully the first of many books to come!

I liked this one, I really like her writing! I like The Hate U Give better, but still think this one is good. It was interesting to read about how Maverick overcomes pretty much every typical stereotype about Black men.
