I love that this YA historical fiction (is 1997 long enough ago to be historical?) tackles teen pregnancy from the father’s perspective. The protagonist is unlike any I’ve read before; he’s a drug-dealing gang member teen and father of two. Maverick is dealt a bad hand and then makes some poor choices. The pleasure of the book is watching him deal with his messed-up life.

Great story of who Maverick was as a teenager and how he became the father he is to Starr and her brothers.

All kids have a coming of age moment, and they all deserve to have heir story told. Here’s one that is not about getting the girl (okay, it’s a little about that) or getting into the right college, but it is about a kid finding himself and his way. This book shows the child inside the troubled kid and we root for him to grow miraculously up from of his hard circumstances, his less-than-ideal choices made when he couldn’t see all of his options - and blossom.

Loved this one even MORE than The Hate U Give and I wanna read them both again now. I think both address super important issues in a way that a younger reader could easily understand which is awesome. I would read like ten more books about these characters.
