Not exactly a fun read (had me stressed for most of it) but it did an excellent job of capturing the real complexities of becoming a parent when you’re still a kid.

I overall find Angie Thomas to be a great writer. I liked Concrete Rose, however I felt that the plot meandered while Mav's character developed. In the end it seemed to be a prequel to THUG rather than stand alone, which of course makes sense, but given his backstory in THUG, I wish the plot had covered more of that story.

angie thomas really is a little bit good, isn’t she?
this was absolutely phenomenal.

Maverick is such a wonderfully complex character in concrete rose. This prequel to The Hate U Give was for me an emotionally satisfying read. Definitely for a High School student and above reader.
This “series” is really special! This book is the prequel for The Hate U Give. I really loved learning more about Maverick’s life, but there were many important parts of the story that were missed in this book. 4 stars instead of 5 because I didn’t love the ending. I didn’t feel like it fit the storyline well.
