I think I loved this book better than THUG. What a beautiful story about a boy becoming a man and setting a course for his life amidst impossible odds. Watching Maverick struggle with masculinity was refreshing and well done. I felt old reading because there are so many great details to orient the reader to the setting - 90s when I grew up. But, I adored all of the detail. A wonderful Coming of Age story. Certainly a favorite of mine. Loved this book!

I loved reading The Hate U Give (now i want to read it again) and it was so fun to read about Maverick’s story. Good to read a book from a point of view I’m not used to reading about and don’t experience.

One thing that threw me with this at first was that I expected more to happen in the final pages/chapters before it ended. If you've already read The Hate U Give, you sort of know how a lot of it turns out, and what happens in the intervening time. I did expect more of that to be covered, but ultimately I think it left off at a perfect point, a hopeful point, especially as Starr gives a brief rundown of what ends up happening for Maverick later in The Hate U Give - it doesn't need to be laid out again when it can end here on a positive note. I mostly wanted to read more about Maverick, to be honest, so I was disappointed for it to end.
I've been picking up and putting down books for months, not getting into them or engaging with them very much, even ones I've read and liked before. Concrete Rose was one I actively wanted to keep reading, because of the writing, the characters, the plot, the messages, everything. Also, the links to characters and events first seen or referred to in The Hate U Give were fun to spot at times, and really poignant at others.
