i adore this book for everything it depicts about what it is to be a black person and for what it teaches while depicting it. besides, it is impossible not to get involved and love this one if one has read “the hate u give”.
another thing i love about this masterpiece is how names have powerful meanings. it’s incredible how maverick is fortunate to have a powerful name and passes this privilege to his kids (seven, starr and sekani).

Angie is a Queen!!! Her stories are everything!! Maverick's backstory was so exciting. Angie's signature hilarious dialogue, heartfelt convos, and natural lessons are a gift to the book world. Can't wait for the next one. :)

i just really enjoyed it. made me understand maverick more as a person and it was so lovely to see him overcome so much even though we did not get like a proper ending. but yeah it was a pretty fast read. it was the first book where i just wanted to sit down and finish it in one go.
Set seventeen years before the events of The Hate U Give (THUG), Maverick Carter’s world is turned upside down when he finds out he’s a Dad to three-month-old Seven and he’s left to take care of the baby. In his neighbourhood, gang rivalry is prevalent and brothers protect brothers, so when his cousin Dre is tragically killed, Maverick takes it upon himself to find out who killed Dre.
However, Maverick soon finds himself becoming a father to another baby - the baby that will grow up to be Star in THUG. Maverick realises that gang life may not be what he wants and is determined to make his own path.

I only started this book this morning and have already finished it! I couldn’t put it down. Once again, Thomas writes a masterpiece and I love getting to go back in time and learn about Maverick’s past and how all the characters from THUG link together.
If you haven’t read this yet, it’s a must!!

Angie Thomas is so good at what she does! This book had heart. I definitely felt like an adult looking in at these teens making less than smart decisions, but I fell in love with these characters too. Thomas just knows how to balance a little bit of humor, everyday struggles and hard themes. I can only hit myself on the head for not picking this book up earlier.

I absaloutly loved The Hate U Give when I read it a couple years back and automatically knew I would love Maverick's story too. Angie has a way with words and is amazing at telling these stories and bringing the real life aspects into them. Will definitely be adding her other books to my collection
