This is a prequel to The Hate U Give, focusing on Maverick (Starr's father). It shows the struggle of a young black man, who becomes a father too young. It was a good read.
Angie Thomas don’t miss. I read this several years after The Hate U Give and without remembering pretty much anything from it. I’m sure that those more familiar with it will have an even more enriching and fulfilling time here with young Maverick.

wasn't a bad one...was nice to learn more about how the kids got their name but definitely wasn't better than the hate you give

Angie Thomas has a true gift. This is everything I hoped it would be, the perfect prequel to The Hate You Give. She has a way with dialogue that’s unmatched. Her characters come alive in the mind, break your heart, frustrate you, make you laugh out loud, bring a tear to your eye. So glad I finally picked this up.
