A solid three and a half stars for me, the sense of place and descriptive narrative are what Angie Thomas does best, but for me,
Spoiler
there feels a slight disconnect between the Maverick Carter in Concrete Rose and the Maverick Carter in The Hate U Give. I get there's around seventeen years between the events in this prequel and the events in The Hate U Give, but it's hard to see how the Maverick in Concrete Rose ends up in prison only a few years after Concrete Rose finishes, and there's other things too, like a beloved character in Concrete Rose is mentioned as constantly being someone important to Maverick, yet they get little mention in The Hate U Give. We're told in The Hate U Give that Maverick went to prison for King but Concrete Rose stops short before these events happen. For me it just feels slightly jarring that there are questions that occur in The Hate U Give that are not answered in Concrete Rose. For me the two books don't gel as two books with recurring characters should do

This was a good book, it made me cry and shake my hair at how stupid the main character is sometimes. The writing was done really well.
