Maverick with baby Seven melted my heart!!!

I received this as a review copy and I was so happy because I really wanted to read it since I loved THUG.

Wow! I maybe loved this book even more than THUG! It’s about Maverick’s (Starr’s dad) youth. I was invested in the story from the first page. The story is just so interesting because I never expected him to be so caring when I read about him in the first book. He was a tough guy in the beginning of this book, but when he realized he was a father, he became such a different person. He became responsible and the scenes with him and Seven were so sweet!
He also had so much patience with Iesha, I really thought Mav was a strong character for giving her the space even though she maybe didn’t deserve it.

It was interesting to see how the meaning of ‘being a real man’ changed. First it was being in a gang and dealing, but now it was taking care of a baby the best and honest way you can.
Also, the queer part in this book was a really good addition.

There were so many references to THUG, like Devante, it was fun to recognize everything! And after I finished it, I scanned through THUG and now I read some parts with a totally different view than before.

Now I just need one thing: a Concrete Rose movie!

Excellent writing, and expert narration. I love when the narrator speaks with the full emotion of the character, as it really brings the authors words to life.

Maverick is a 17 year old who is aware of street life but still in school with an opportunity to go to college. As he starts to think about his next move with his girlfriend Lisa, life throws that curve ball and he’s now faced with life choices.
🍃
Maverick’s dad is in prison (former gang member), his mom is doing her best and in one of the most crucial years of his life he has to determine which path he going to take.
🍃
Concrete Rose was funny and real as hell. As I read it, I was able to visualize it.  Imagery!! When you read it, you will understand and in some cases identify the experiences of mistakes, life decisions, family, death & loss and determination. My favourite Character was Mr. Wyatt.
