“It's kinda like how we have to do with ourselves. Get rid of the things that don't do us any good. If it won't help the rose grow, you've gotta let it go.”

“You gotta love people enough to let them go, especially when you're the reason they're gone.”

“Living your life based off what other people think, ain’t living at all.”

I really loved this prequel. Maverick's past as a King Lord was such an important part of The Hate U Give that I was beyond excited when I found out there was a prequel about his life. This book follows Starr's father, Maverick, at 17 years old, as he struggles with the realities of gang life, an incarcerated father, high school and the realities of fatherhood as a teen. First of all, it was adorable to experience Seven as an infant. Second of all, there is something so sweet about seeing a character who thinks the definition of masculinity is being tough and not showing your feelings become aware of how bullshit that mindset is. The scenes with just Seven and Maverick were some of the cutest scenes I've ever read. Also the audio book was 🔥.

There isn't much I didn't like about this novel. However, it didn't quite beat out THUG so I knocked off a half star. If you've read THUG, I'd definitely recommend this prequel!

Set years before The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas takes us through the journey of a 17 year old Maverick Carter who seems to be facing challenges that requires him to make decisions that will not only change his life but also pave a way for the son he just found out that he has.

He has to decide whether he wants to continue slinging the drugs or lead a clean life by working at the store after school.

Being a parent proves to be challenging for him, especially with all the things happening in his life, that just drags him back to a life he is trying to leave behind.

I reccomend for anyone who has read and loved THUG. This is a story of being young and making mistakes and also owning up to those mistakes.
It deals with issues that have been a part of our daily lives then, and still are even today. Might not exactly be the same but they are relevant.

I also just love Angie's writing style. Her ability to put the reader through each emotion the chatacter goes through, on every turn of the page, I must commend. All the joys, the pains, the laughter. It was like watching a movie...except this movie was in words

Angie Thomas on kyllä taitava!
