The sneezing trick was hilarious, specially because of Blyton's description that made them seem lively.

I am basing my rating for these childhood books on how much I enjoyed them when I read them as a child.

Were girls at that time judged for being ambitious and expected to just be modest schoolgirls (re: Mavis and Zerelda)? I get that they're vain and Zerelda acts all uppity, but the message could be delivered in a kinder way. It must have been traumatising for Zerelda to be told by her drama teacher that she just doesn't have the acting talent so she should stop trying, all because the teacher claims to have a gift in spotting talents. Even more appalling that Zerelda actually giving up on her dreams and trying to fit in are framed as the correct things to do.
