interesting story, not the most well-written, but a quick and entertaining read.

The description of the book was a bit misleading. I was under the impression that most of the story would be just the author's time at a harem but it was more about the author and her life at during a couple years span as well as delving into her past. I found parts of it out of place and found it jumped around a bit too much for my liking.

I would almost give this book a higher rating if it didn't drag on so much at the end. I really had to force myself through the last 50 pages. I found the main character annoying and really could not sympathize with her at all. The Harem part of the book seems so small, the title should not be so focused around it. But I guess that aside from that it's really just someone's average life.

My mother-in-law apparently thought that I was edifying myself too much in my process of reading the top 100 books of the 19th-century on Goodreads, so she sent me this good-and-trashy memoir. Her secondary reason may have been that the author and I are both NYU theatre school dropouts - although the author became an international prostitute, and I spent five years contemplating thousands of pounds of cheese behind the counter at Whole Foods. I'm happy with my decision, although obviously I did not get a scandalous best-selling memoir out of it.

An interesting book. I saw the author on an investigative show and she referenced this book. The idea behind it surprised me as it not know such lives existed. Her story is strange and interesting, and reads like a warning tale. Definitely kept my interest.

how i feel about this book is more of a reflection on me...

where was the sex? this tease of a book is desperately lacking in the sex department and felt more like an over indulgent diary of a pseudo intellectual.

what would patty smith do? i don't care.

The story is somewhat interesting, but the book was not that interesting. A Jewish girl from NJ ends up in the harem of a prince in Brunei... You kind of want to know how in the world does that happen, but it really isn't that exciting of a story!
