Big big fan of the show— but I found this to be really lackluster. Maybe the other ones will be better. But I won’t be looking into them for a while.

I can honestly say I love the television series alot better than the book and I'm only in the first one.

I’m not going to say this is trashy vampire romance. Just slightly out of touch. Sometimes the thoughts and actions of teenagers feel as though they’re written by someone who has long-since forgotten what it’s like to actually be one.

When I was twelve, I ate this series up. I couldn’t read fast or well at the time, but I read these. I was fueled by my obsession with the series, of course. But I still found the differences interesting enough to separate the two completely. So here I am, 23, bored, and ready to attempt to reread the ones I’ve always read, and read the ones I never got to.

This isn’t the perfect story. It’s not written in a way that I would say it life changing or deserving of awards. However, you grow to love the characters quickly. The plot is simple, and the story doesn’t drag on. That’s not a bad thing. Every single book you read doesn’t need to be immaculate to earn your praise.

I think this is a solid read. It didn’t take long. It was nostalgic, and just as interesting as it was the first time. I’m willing to ignore the shortcomings because the overall story is good.

The fact that this book series got turned into an actually watchable CW show is freaking unbelievable. What idiot/genius had that idea? This book is a young adult novel that felt like it was written for ten year olds. It was HORRIBLY written, with less than a plot, NO characterization whatsoever, and a dearth of knowledge of how to build a compelling backstory. I could not bring myself to care about a single person in this series, and that's really sad because *spoiler alert* people are dying and some are coming back to life all the fucking time. Ugh. I cannot believe that I wasted the day that it took me to read this shit. And even worse, that I decided to continue reading the remainder of the "Vampire Diaries" series. HOW DID THIS BECOME A HIT TV SHOW? Someone's a damn good TV writer, because they took the literal bare bones of this series (like, the names of some of the characters and a few basic character traits) and elevated it into brilliance. Waste of time. Do not read.

I wanted to love it because I love the show, but the dialogue is terrible and Elena could not be more stupid and annoying.

Not that bad, but not that good either.
Towards the ending it went better, but it is slowpaced.
