I'm on a nostalgia journey because I remember reading this series way back in high school before the tv show was even a thing. I know that they are radically different than the series, but I remember enjoying them a lot.

I will say the first book is weak. Are any of the characters likable? Not really. Is the entire plot and romance shaky? Absolutely. Are there outdated views on current hot topics? Definitely. But come on. It's a teen vampire romance. Of course it's angsty. Of course the love is inexplicably instant. Of course the seniors in high school are bratty, bitchy, and arrogant.

None of that makes it less of a fun trip down memory lane. I can't wait to get to the rest of the books because I remember some pretty interesting things that happen in the rest of the series!

Light reading and I enjoyed it. I'm completely obsessed with the Vampire Diaries (books and show) so I'm trying to give this a fair rating for someone who may not be like me. I was never a fan of Twilight or any other Vampire drama, but if you are, you will probably really enjoy this book. There is more plot, character development, and it is much better written/edited than Twilight. Obviously there is massive power imbalances and the weirdness that comes along with humans dating vampires, but Elena has more autonomy than you normally see in the genre.

It was entertaining but at the same time a little too slow for my taste. Elena isn’t a very interesting character yet and I feel no emotional connections to any characters. Nothing really happened. I thought there would be more fantastical fun

So this was just not good lol. First Elena Is so annoying and self centered. She’s not like other girls she’s better 🙄. She literally thinks every boy is In love with her. She’s also a terrible friend. Also Stefan had no and I mean not an ounce of personality so I don’t know why everyone wanted him. Also the show is so much better because they honestly changed everything. I wouldn’t really recommend unless you want to see the differences between the show and book or you just love the show.
