I was excited to begin this but found the story immediately annoying and.. basic.
I thought this book was about Wren, but the consistent change in POV from chapter to chapter between Wren and the Warsword turned it into an enemies-to-lovers romantasy fuelled by their mutual distaste for each other. and worse, it jumped straight into this situation; I never fully grasped why they hate each other so much, even though they clearly had spoken in the past about their physical attraction to each other. this antagonistic approach to their relationship, based on events that happened before this book began, really ruined the actual story for me.

another failing was that the story told us, repeatedly and in flashbacks, about their past history, rather than showing us in present time through words, gestures, and more nuanced ways. I thought this was simplistic and it didn't make sense.
I have since realised that this book is actually a spinoff story from a previous series by the writer, so much of this was harking back to what happened in that series and the aftermath. I can only hope that people who have read that series were able to make sense of this story, because I couldn't.

a huge disappointment, but there are better stories I can spend my time reading.

Me: I really need to stop starting series that aren't finished
Also me: Okay but this one looks really good.. and that cover!

If I hadn't started this on a school night I would have finished this in one sitting. It has so many things I like - forced proximity, enemies to lovers, wonderful side characters AND it's set in a dark academia setting? The relationship between Wren and Torj was a slow burn but it was not without any tension. I loved that we got to see her work through her grief and trauma as the story progressed. After that ending I am very much looking forward to the next one.

I guess this is based in the world from another series? Having not known that until after I finished, you will be fine starting here lol.

It just failed to draw me in at any point. I didn't care much for the characters or the plot.. it was just meh. Might be a me problem.

Spoiler free review :-

I like this book a lot, I found the characters lovable with a couple of funny side characters to enjoy. I haven’t read The Legends of Thezmarr but didn’t feel like I absolutely had to, important information was explained.

I felt that there were times there could have been great little plot twists or something interesting to uncover but nothing happened. The plot twists that did happen were anticlimactic. I felt the end of predictable and was rushed, there could have been more to it.

The enemies to lovers was really good, there was this love/hate relationship that neither understood - they wanted to hate each other. The spice was *chefs kiss* for me.

Overall, I give it 3.5 stars and will continue reading the series to see what happens.
