I’m disappointed by this one, especially because I loved the Legends of Thezmarr series. This had so much potential for a cool storyline and fun characters and found family and just fell flat. There was hardly any plot related to the school itself and the side characters were hardly seen. Not sure why Kip and Cal were even there and it just felt like hundreds of pages of “will they/wont they” and not much else.

Wowee, this was a book and a half. I was lucky enough to get a copy of this via Netgalley and I'm glad I did.
The world building and storyline was brilliant.
I absolutely loved Wren and Torj, they had such a tumultuous start and it was really funny. Wren can be sassy and she comes across as fiercely independent, Torj appears as trying to keep her tethered due to him also seeming sassy but essentially he is protecting her.
The sizzling chemistry in this book is not to be missed.
Trying to retrain gets a bit tricky when Wren has to complete the gauntlet but is she made it tough stuff....that's for me to know and you to find out when you read this.

Helen knows exactly what she's doing. My 6th book from her this year and my lowest rated so far, but still an incredible book (which shows how much I have loved her previous ones). The Legend of Thezmarr series was a 5 star read for me. I'm lucky enough to have a copy of Thorns and Fire and I'm really excited to give it a read.

I had no idea there was a whole series before this one! While my reading experience went kinda okay without having read The Legends of Thezmarr, I think I'm going to go back and read the first series. The context definitely would have been helpful - there were a lot of references throughout the book to the events that happened 5 years ago. Regardless, this book sucked me in! It's certainly a slow-burn but I loved the chemistry between the characters and I want to learn more about where Wren and Torj's story is going.
what I loved:
-the last 20% of the book really popped off
-the evolution of Wren and Torj's relationship
-ALL the pining
-found family and friendships
what I didn't love:
-lack of learning more about Dessa and Xavier (I loved their budding friendship but we didn't get nearly enough of the 3 of them as I thought we should have!)
-the reason why Wren and Torj's relationship soured (this kept getting rehashed over and over and it got SO old, so quickly)
-the Gauntlet is such a huge deal but in reality doesn't last long at all?
I'm looking forward to book 2 but will be keeping myself busy with the 1st series and all of the prequels!
