I love Wren’s character even more than I did in the last series. And I loved the soft moments we got to see of Torj. The academic setting in this book was everything I wanted. It was lush and colorful, I loved all the garden and forest scenes. I also loved learning about all of the different plants and their uses and getting to see Cal and Kipp show up as prominent characters in this book as well. It was fun getting to see different sides to them. That ending made me so mad though!!

Didn’t hit for me…it didn’t keep my attention. The trials were mundane and the gauntlet ended up being such a small portion in the end. None of the relationships were developed outside of the main romance, which was predictable. It would’ve been nice to have more character development from her teammates instead of keeping Cal and Kipp around. Dessa was pretty inconsequential.

When Autumn revealed this would be one of Fairyloot’s Romantasy picks, the first thing I did was look up if I had to read the Blood and Steel series because I didn’t have 4 extra books in me when my tbr is already so neglected. multiple wonderful people on the internet who read the arc said it wasn’t necessary but obviously would help. And they were right.

If I had read that 4 book series I’m sure I would have liked this. But, alas, it was just fine. I didn’t read through the war and trauma of Wren losing her best friends and sister, I didn’t get Torj and Wren’s backstory of meeting and slow burn part of this romance from the first series. I just got the …yearning? And spicy part. I wouldn’t even call it yearning, they were just horny for each other the whole book, but I guess in a more loving way? These characters already felt developed and I just got the end of their love story.

The ending should have knocked this down to two stars. I won’t be continuing the series.

This book kept me guessing on the motives and intentions. The characters pull you in and get you to care for them.
