I have been in a bit of a slump, everything this month has been eh but this book shook me out of my malaise and renewed my love of romantasy. The slow burn, the forced proximity, the depth of feelings, they were all sooooo good. I absolutely ate this up. The audiobook was good, it was a dual narration with lots of changing of POV chapters and the narrators didn't do annoying false male or female voices. The voice for Torj, he was excellent. I am going to be dying until book 2 comes out. This is my new favorite romantasy author. Excuse me while I go look for everything she's written.

The book was good. I just don’t really enjoy books about someone so incredibly stubborn that does not realise what everyone is telling them about healing their soul and letting go. She did not even want to try to work through her grief. Healing the soul is not my trope, but it’s good and I kinda like the Bear Slayer.
But even though i like him and Wren, I liked them as a side characters better. I just don’t feel as attacked to him and Wren as I did about Thea and Wilder. But that also might be because I resonate more with Thea and the way Thea deals with emotions than Wren. Also, with Thea’s books, I could not put them down. With this, I had to make multiple breaks from Wren when she would be so far up her ass that she started to frustrate me.
I’m not the best at reviews, I don’t even know if it is one, but these are my feelings about it :)

I definitely enjoyed this book and start to the series more than the series that comes before it.

The writing felt a lot smoother and the story was more interesting to me. I guess I also like Wrens character more than her sisters.
Instead of being a physical warrior, she uses her mind way more.

I did not like that there is so much miscommunication or rather no communication again, it is a somewhat overused trope, but I guess it is needed to set up the story for book 2.

If you like yearning and angst, this book is for you. The author tries her hand at enemies to lovers again with Wren and Torj, but as she did in the last series, struggles to make the enemies believable. If you read the Legends of Thezmar series, you know that these two are anything but enemies. I loved the Legends of Thezmar series for the trials and found family. The romance grew on me throughout the four books, but it is not what hooked me. This book fell short on those aspects for me and focused on the romance, or I should say the build-up to the romance. Kipp and Cal are in this book, but do not provide as much comic relief as the previous series, and that void is not filled with a new character. The setting is an alchemy school, so we have trials, but that portion of the plot takes a back seat to the angst and pining of the couple. This author is good at the spice, and that portion of this book is top-notch.

This book was one of my most anticipated reads for 2025, and to have the opportunity to read it early in 2024 is beyond special.
The previous series, The Legends of Thezmarr, was highly enjoyable and through them I fell in love with both Wren and Torj. I've been so excited to see how their story would play out.
Let me tell you - Helen Scheuerer has the formula for an incredible romantasy perfected! The longing, the tension, the high stakes drama. It's all here and done so well. There is so much brewing under the surface of these characters, especially in the aftermath of the war which takes place five years prior to this book. I really felt the personal stories of the characters was interspersed well with the action throughout the book, and we also get a healthy dose of some fantastic side characters. Wren has already secured herself the spot as my favourite character from both series. So many elements of her journey and her reactions to things are incredibly relatable and I felt them to my core.
I loved the strong ending and I am genuinely so excited to see where the story goes!

Thank you so much to Pan Macmillan for the arc via NetGalley and for giving me the opportunity to share my honest thoughts on this book.
