These stories are . . . odd. The first one nearly made me DNF before getting to the other two, but I decided to start the second one and it was an okay choice. Story one is a stilted cliched mess and isn’t really worth talking about; stories 2 and 3 have a bit more depth and actually acknowledge politics beyond the little we usually get. They weren’t perfect, but I did have to admire the attempt.

Story 2 (A Holiday Crush) was my favorite. It’s between a 41 year old lawyer and a younger man he meets through work. They are attracted to each other and bond more through their love of music, going to a Handel’s Messiah singalong and karaoke, having more group outings before they start to date. It’s set in 2017 and acknowledges who’s in the White House and there is a secondary character who is a Dreamer and is impacted by Presidential policies.

The third story (Pattern for an Angel) is a little more try hard, with a young man raising an adopted son who likes to dress in feminine clothing. He wants to support the child, and when he meets a drag queen who dresses in feminine clothing most of the time, he thinks he should introduce his kid so he’ll feel better about wanting to wear dresses. The sentiment is sweet, but the whole thing is a little simplistic.

I really liked the concepts for the short stories, but they just did not do it for me.
