Why did I rate this three stars? Not because of the writing style, which I’ll admit, was certainly not my favorite, but because of the fascinating and mournful plot. An interesting thing to note while reading this story was that a lot of samsa’s metamorphosis into a bug was less about how he himself felt but making sure to please others and avoid upsetting them. kafka frequently writes about how samsa was “forced to impose on them”, and wanting to “spare them what distress they were indeed suffering through” even when it was him that was struggling the most. i think of course it obviously goes deeper than a man’s transformation to vermin; it’s about isolation, mental illness, existentialism, and feeling alienated. his own family cannot offer him support, and they run away from him in disgust for the thing that he is l, even though it is not in his power to change it. he is treated so differently, so distinctly inhumanly, that his sister “came in on tip toe as if entering the room of someone seriously ill or even of a stranger,” NOT the room of a familiar brother she loved. i think this view certainly highlights Gregor Samsa’s isolation from the world, and his exhaustion of the bleak,
monotonous jobs of normal life — even when he turns into a bug, there is no major change in the way he sees things, no panic or confusion. he accepts it for what it is and continues on like everything’s normal, making his situation and his reaction to it especially absurd. He is unloved. Nobody wants to stay alone with him, but they can’t leave him alone either. They forget to see him as a member of their family, turning him into something monstrous, to be scared of and ashamed of, unable to see the good in him and urging to leave him because he has already caused them too much trouble. this perspective was especially interesting to note, as if trying to suppress gregor’s illness and alienation, making him feel more isolated than he was before. injured, abandoned, and unable to communicate, he is left to hope and wish good things for his family even when they lose all hope for him. He cannot see or experience beauty. He cannot prove for his family. The end made me so sad. Kafka needs a hug.
