3 stars. Well, it was better than the first Kristen Ashley book I read at least.
This was entirely too damn long for me to just feel lukewarm about it. I really enjoyed the first 30% or so and actually breezed through that but then when a certain thing gets found out by our heroine, it completely dragged the rest of this book down for me. There was too much happening at once not only with the main characters but with the side characters as well. It got to be pretty exhausting by the end of it.
I still don't like Kristen Ashley's writing style. It's too repetitive and her over descriptions of clothes and other unnecessary things made my left eye twitch. I think her over descriptions did however work for the way that she described Max's house and the town that this was set in. I loved the setting of this story. A really small, cozy little town up in the mountains in Colorado. It was great.
The romance in this was pretty good. I'm not even going to sit here and lie. I think while it starts kind of fast it develops quite nicely. And the ending, while a bit rushed was really cute.
Nina wasn't as bad as whatsherface in Rock Chick but she definitely wasn't one of my favorite female characters. She tip toed the line of getting on my nerves a lot but she wasn't insufferable. She was really just kind of a flat character. She doesn't have much of a personality.
Max on the other hand was great. Over the top alpha's are kinda my thing (when done right) and he was definitely that. He was actually sweet underneath all that macho.
After two books, I'm going to start a KA drinking board game.
Take a shot every time you see:
The phrase "I'm sorry?" <- This one is the killer. Only professional drinkers should take on this challenge cause you will die
The word 'Um'
The phrase 'skip-dance'
Nina doesn't get to complete a sentence and or gets interrupted (bonus points if it's Max that interrupts her!)
Nina repeats what someone just said because for some fucking reason she didn't understand as if that person were speaking a different language than her
Max and Nina getcock blocked interrupted before sex
The word 'Duchess'
Drink responsibly, folks!
I have one more KA book that I need to read because it (just like this one) was chosen for me for a challenge. I'm not really expecting much from it at this point but at least I know what I'm going to be getting.

This book leaned very heavily on the insta-love trope, but it was also believable, and that's what kept me going.
Now when I started this,I didn’t realise the MMC was a widower (I typically stay away from those because It often feels like the new love interest will never truly measure up to the deceased patner) and my worst fears were confirmed.A large portion of this book's tension centred around Nina grappling with the memory of Max's late wife to the point where the rest of the plot faded into the background.
That said, the chemistry between Nina and Max was explosive and I loved the different little ways they expressed affection for eachother. However, Nina needed therapy as she was always so busy showing up for people that she forgot herself leaving Max to constantly carry the emotional load. And Max..That man needed to learn how to let others take care of him.Never mind Nina's emotional walls, his hypervigilance was at times unsettling.
Despite all those issues,I loved the found family, the growth of the different side characters, and how the rape/suicide themes were handled.

Happy ending
I loved Max & Nina's happily ever after story. Although there was a lot going on and the story was truly funny & was worth a good read.

A rollercoaster of a book, full of love, loss, and feelings. Being open to new people and making connections. Colorado, a snowstorm, deep sleep, tended while she’s sick, enjoying fighting each other, a man with a memory. Breaking up with your fiance with very short notice.
Miscarriage, death, car accident, rape, shitty dads, bad friends, gunshots, kidnapping, domestic abuse, violence.

I loved Nina. Really liked Max too, but I thought it was stupid of him to not consider that absolutely anyone and everyone in town would more than likely mention his 'secret' almost right away. All of them figuring he had already told her, which if he weren't being a twit, he would have. I didn't feel he apologized for that enough. Of course they almost never do. -sigh-
Still, it was a great read and one of my favourite epilogues!

There is just. Way. Too. Much. Going on. A romance novel turned mystery, turned crime novel turned, ultra-descriptive breakfast scene. Whaaa? At least at some points I lolled.
3.5 stars. There were parts of this book I really liked. I liked Max a lot and sometimes I liked Nina, but sometimes she was annoying. I liked the town and all the characters. The writing was good. I just had a hard time believing
