My introduction to this author, and now I definitely want to explore more of his work. The beauty lies in the details. He leaves nothing out, but it doesn't get tedious at all like I feared it would.

I read this book upon the recommendation of a Stratford Waterstones employee and I am so grateful. I have enjoyed other McEwan novels and so I knew the tense read I was in for. Somehow, McEwan managed to write from the point of view of his confident Dr Perowne who seems to ave it together, who is happy and yet also uneasy. And all the while we get the sense of some imminent danger. I read with unease but a good sense of unease, if that is possible. At times, I was frustrated by the wordiness, by the tangents that seem irrelevant. But without these rambling thoughts of our protagonist, perhaps the tension would not be built in the right way or to the right extent. I am not sure I enjoyed it as much as Enduring Love or Atonement. Still, it had suspense, great characterisation and authentic emotion.

Initially I was unsure of the novel. After teaching the second half, I could not put the book down. While the characters may not be terribly likable at times - I found them to be truly human, with relatable and redeeming qualities. Moreover, I adored the way in which it was written and the Arnold poem at the end.

I always admire McEwan's writing but I find it difficult to thoroughly enjoy a book with not a single likeable character.

entertaining, thought-provoking, suspenseful, well-written, relevant

Hilarious in it's oddness.

Here's a guy who is approaching fifty. He wakes up to find what he thinks is a meteor hurling towards earth (turns out it is a plane on fire, and he's close enough to Heathrow to be able to see it from his bedroom window), so he has sex. Of course. Then - on the way to his squash game, he's mugged. Poor guy. Then he drives around for a couple of hours trying to figure his life out (was it the mugging or the meteor which set him off ... or was it the sex?), then he comes home, makes a huge meal for his uber-successful family, overpowers a group of thugs who break into his house(the thugs try to rape his daughter, but she does a nude-poetry reading and saves the day), jets off to the hospital to perform brain surgery on one of the thugs after diagnosing their leader, and then comes home and has more sex while waiting for the police to arrive to investigate the break-in. Wait, did you forget this guy was approaching 50? All of this and no nap?!?! It's a fantasy book!
