It's an interesting book. Took me a long time to get through it. Almost a sense of relief when I was finished. The writing is very detailed (almost to a fault) but I loved the picture the author painted. Felt like I was right along with the main character.

What a strange interesting (and yet at times frustrating) book

A thoughtful and engrossing day-in-the-life novel set in 2003 that features ordinary routine side by side with extraordinary events and the personal with the global. I really enjoyed this novel and want to read more from McEwan (this was my first!)

Loved this book - it was different to most others I've read in that it follows one man on his journey through London on one day. The journey takes him through London, into his thoughts, and among his family. There was a contrasting dichotomy between the global terrorist crisis and Dr Henry Perowne's personal crisis. Later in the book when Henry is at home waiting for his family there is an evocative cooking scene so well written that you can just about taste the food.
Story features poetry, family, and ends with a moral question about the correct action to take.
