I just can’t stand Monster Blood, I don’t get why it gets so many sequels

That actually had me scared for Evan and loved the twist ending! Kermit, omg, i've never hated a child so badly!

It's perhaps unfair to read a Goosebumps book after reading something like Red Country by Joe Abercrombie, as there's such a stark difference in quality. Don't get me wrong, it would be wildly unjust to compare the two, but I still couldn't help but be a little disappointed as I trudged my way through this book. Monster Blood III - the first Goosebumps threequel - picks up a little after the events of Monster Blood II, and features some returning characters. However, once again the magical element present in Monster Blood is pretty much completely ignored.

Our protagonist, Evan, returns alongside his female friend Andy. There were hints of romance in the first book, but this was largely set aside in the second and again isn't really developed here. School bully Conan also returns to menace Evan and Andy. We're introduced to Evan's cousin, Kermit, who is into science and is also a massively insufferable brat. Trigger, Evan's poor put-upon dog in the first book, has a couple of fleeting appearances, but the main dog in this book is Kermit's dog, which Stine has opted to name Dogface. I really want to know what dog hurt Stine in his youth.

Anyway, Monster Blood III expands on a plot element that is briefly glimpsed during the climax of Monster Blood II and see's Evan accidentally ingesting some Monster Blood and then growing big. Shenanigans ensue. Unfortunately Stine doesn't do a great job of depicting Evan's increasing size, so I would often find it hard to picture exactly how big Evan was supposed to have grown as he goes about his hijinks. The ending is also painfully obviously signposted right at the beginning, so the book lacks any real tension and instead feels rather tedious. There are also diversions into some silliness that doesn't really sit well - it's all just a bit poor. Once again the padding is obvious, and although there's definitely potential with this concept it isn't really realised here.

The Monster Blood continues! The problem that is the green goop is a growing problem. There seems to be no end to all the trouble it brings Evan and his friend Andy. Fortunately Evan has a genius cousin to get him out of such sticky situations.

Another Goosebumps book I'd forgotten I read. These things were quite the gateway to reading. If your kids are interested PLEASE let them read 'em.
