Not as good as A Room With a View or Howard's End, but it doesn't make me love Forster any less.
2.5 stars. A difficult yet ultimately disappointing book. Maybe the summer is preventing me from engaging with such serious literature, but I found it hard to figure out where Forster's sympathies lie. It is interesting, however, how one of the protagonists is Muslim as opposed to Hindu.
I’m left dissatisfied with this book, despite feeling like it was an Important Read. The dialogue and philosophy was what mattered, not the exact plot, but the conclusion felt too much like “India is uncivilized and savage” for my taste. Too much imperialism, even in its overt critique of it. Maybe it was more nuanced in 1924 when written, but it felt vaguely off the whole time and was a slog of a read. Lacking energy and anything captivating. Still worthwhile somehow, but I was disappointed by the overall message. And poor Aziz, I’m glad he kept his dignity in the end.

A too accurate and also discouraging glimpse of human nature.
“We may hate one another, but we hate you most. If I don’t make you go, Ahmed will, Karim will, if it’s fifty or five hundred years we shall get rid of you, yes, we shall drive every blasted Englishman into the sea, and then - he rode against him furiously - and then, he concluded, half kissing him, you and I shall be friends.”
Holy crap.
Holy crap.

took me a bit to get into this but once the story started going i did enjoy it
the plot was not what i expected but in a good way?
the only thing it makes me think about it how much our behaviour is made up by previous experience and how biased that can make us
because our experiences are not infallible - they are dependent on our perception
