the race relations in this book make me feel icky.

I found all the dry-Britishness to make a slow and plodding book, but I greatly appreciated the nuance with which all the characters were drawn. I don't know that I needed the final installment, with Fielding and Aziz making amends; it felt a little gratuitous and proselytizing.

Had trouble getting into this book, but stuck with it. The story was boring at times, but gave me some insight into Indian culture and their struggles with white Europeans.

DID NOT FINISH

Wanted to read something more current instead

Very good all the way through. One underlying theme, that colonialism makes all forms of friendship impossible, resonates strongly.
