One of the rare instances I watched the movie first... only because I didn't know there was a book! I loved the movie so much, I knew I had to go back and read the book, and it didn't disappoint. A Passage to India is such a good look into classism and racism. The story follows a group of British aristocrats and travelers in British-ruled India. While some are just there for the spectacle of seeing "a real-life Indian!!" a rare few experience the culture and beauty of this foreign country. But as class lines are crossed, trouble ensues. The story is told from multiple perspectives that offer a heart-breaking look at the issues at hand.
So, this white lady goes into a cave with this Indian guy and comes out accusing him of something that she's not sure really happened. And thusly we explore the crazy political and social dynamics between colony and colonizer. Many say this is Forster's best work, but I get so peeved at the white lady for not knowing what really happened in the cave that I have to take away stars.
I enjoy Forster's characterization & plot. Wrote an extended essay on his works as part of my degree for which I read Passage.
If you want to understand the post-colonial mentality this is a good place to start.
An interesting account of colonization in India. Much better than the movie!
I know it's philosophical and even kind of interesting, but some of this showing everyone's ethnocentrism was not very entertaining.
I really wanted to love this book. I didn’t. It took me months to get through it. I couldn’t do it.
Once I got into Part 2 it got a bit better, but only slightly. Maybe I will try again another time.
