This story continues soon after the first ended, with Robin Blyth's sister starring as the main character this round. I enjoyed that there was such a different environment to the first, now that the audience is familiar with the world we are able to dive headfirst into a murder mystery on a cruise ship!

I am always a fan of character building and this story had more of it than the first story, and because Maud is such a bold and charming character the book as a whole is more fun than that of the first. Recommend continuing the series to whoever began it!

Not gonna lie, I was not expecting Maud to be a better character than both Robin or Edwin, but I absolutely love her. This book was a great continuation to A Marvellous Light, I feel as though I understand more of the magic system now, even as so many elements of this book/story disrupt the magic system as it is. The little asides, like Violet being told her finger cradling has picked up an American accent, delighted the everloving fuck out of me. I still prefer A Marvellous Light as a story, but that's just me being obsessed with their relationship, and I know that about myself.

The book is described as lesbian Knives Out on a boat, which is fair now, having read it. I was expecting more of a mystery than I got because I thought it would be that aspect of it, but it leaned more into the bumbling frantic nature of KO, which I also love. Maud was the perfect character to play it, and Violet was an incredible companion for her. I'm so beyond excited for the third book, esp if I'm right on who the next main character is gonna be.

One thing I will say I'd hoped this book would give that it really didn't is a more solid sense of the opposition and the risk, especially in who the players on the other side of the gambit were or their intentions with the Last Contract. We have Edwin's musings and fears of what might be possible with access to such a thing, but that doesn't feel like a good threat for me to rally behind. Likewise, the biggest bad so far, named in this book, was still absent from the book, so I still don't really feel like I know what they're up against? But none of this stopped me from WANTING to know more, from finding it an amazing read anyway, and from being absolutely feral for book 3. Now please, I shan't wait another day.

The mystery element of this second book was weaker than the first for me, which I think made me enjoy this book less. Since the identity of the murderer was revealed so quickly and we didn’t have an element like the curse in the first book, the levels of tension felt low. The characters also knew what item they needed to find, but spent much of the time they should have been searching having romantic scenes. I think the first book balanced these aspects far better. I will say I am excited for the third book which I’m assume will be about Hawthorn and Ross with cameos from our previous leads.

DID NOT FINISH

Tbhhhhh I find the main character and her romance quite boring... I really like a closed-space murder mystery on a ship, but they just kePT gOING and kept boning and i was like just solve the mystery already!!! But i think I'll read the next on in the series because I really like Jack.
