I really enjoyed this! There was A LOT going on in this book, at times it was a bit hard to keep up. But at the same time, I think that's what made it so fast paced. Love a book that unexpectedly contains Victorian Sex. Another small qualm I have, is the epilogue- I miss Violet.
DNF at 25%. I’m not a fan of romances where one character is incredibly naive and their love interest serves as a sort of mentor in the relationship - it’s an icky dynamic for me. Super disappointing since the first in the series, the two love interests were both on such equal footing that it was refreshing.

Maud is ready to have her great big adventure but finding a murder on her ship and meeting the perplexing and alluring Violet were not part of the plan. Stuck on the open sea she'll have to use her wits to unravel the conspiracies surrounding her.
Strengths: The characters are fully realized and interesting to read about. Their decisions make sense, their ideas make sense and their reactions make sense. I understood why Maud would be attracted to Violet and vice versa. I think the boat setting also worked nicely for the murder mystery and conspiracy plots because we became familiar with the setting very well.
Weaknesses: It sucks to say but this book is filler. Not much happens regarding the series as a whole and while it was fun this story could have been skipped as a whole which is sad and make it hard to say whether or not I think it is a good solid story. I'm not sure it would stand on its own fully.
Lesson: Middle books should have a purpose and if that purpose is flimsy at least cover it well. The second book should have interesting things happening inside of it and be a catalyst for a prospective reader to jump into the next book with excitement. It fails at this purpose if afterward the reader questions if they should finish a story or not. 3.5/5

DNF beginning of ch 8, 2hrs 22mins (17%) into the audiobook. I do not remember A Marvelous Light fondly but figured I'd give Freya Marske another chance because this book sounded fun. Didn't care about the characters or the story once again 🥲 I don't enjoy her writing so I'm putting her firmly in the Not For Me category.
