this is my first 5 star read of the year. this book is amazing and chanel’s ability to write her story so eloquently is admirable. my chest hurt so much while reading this book, and as much as i thought i knew about r*pe cases in courts, i really had no clue how much injustice really existed. every time i thought it was finally over, chanel and her family and friends finally had the ending they wanted something else would come up. i didn’t realize that a guilty sentence does not mean case closed. it is not that easy. it is so messed up and unfathomable how many injustices occur in the court system.  chanel’s strength was insane and i felt the anger, the sadness, the frustration, the empathy with every setback, every negative comment, every person who made grossly inaccurate, invalidating, inconsistent claims about victims. i’m so grateful that chanel was empowered enough to keep going and had the support to because her story is so important and inspiring for others.

Literally begging anyone and everyone to read this. What an incredible memoir. Chanel does not hold back in her account of what happened to her before, during, and after the Brock Turner trial. I was in tears throughout the book. Her story is a reminder of the difficulty women face in speaking up against their abuser even if there is damning evidence and proof everywhere you look.

I remember hearing about this trial occurring and the events of the 2016 election so vividly as she slowly discusses how her survivor story happened during such a crucial time in the world.

Hearing her narrate this book made this experience so much more powerful, especially when she read her 12-page victim impact statement where she had to continue to pause while reading and you could hear the emotion in her voice and delivery of the speech.

A reminder to listen to victims and survivors. And you know nothing of what someone is going through.

CW: rape, sexual assault, sexual violence

Chanel Miller’s memoir about the aftermath of her assault at a college frat party is a powerful and devastating read as she goes into her experience of being forced to fight in the legal system instead of being allowed time to heal. She articulates the inexcusable double standards that survivors are held to and what it feels like to exist as a woman with painful accuracy. While this is by no means an easy read because of the content, it is so well written that I couldn’t put it down.

Stellar book. Sadly, I didn’t super feel like I was learning things I didn’t already know. My heart goes out to Chanel, and I genuinely think this is a book that everyone should read. Truly, I don’t feel like I can fairly give a judgement because the power of her story and how she tells it speaks for itself
