Although this isn't my favorite by L'Amour (plus he kind of plagiarized it from a screenplay based on a short story by him), it kept me entertained! I would recommend it for anyone looking for a good Western or anyone trying to get into Westerns!

"Under a quiet sky the planet turned, and horses ate, and men slept, and death waited for morning."

Another short but great Western. L'Amour has a poetic way of describing the West that makes it come alive in my mind. While the characters do fall into the normal tropes (Hondo is a "man's man", Angie is a "homemaker with backbone who needs a man") the story still drew me in and kept me wondering what will happen next. There aren't any big surprises or twists in this story but its still a really enjoyable read.

Took me forever to read, but in all like five days. I just took a long break. Fun story, interesting history since its L'Amour's first novel. I enjoyed the portrayal of good and bad people on both sides, felt even handed and surprisingly aware of the history and the evils perpetrated against native people

Super hero of wildwest. Enjoyed. Later stumbled on a Jhon Wayne movie which was pale compared to the novel

Great book. I found myself engrossed in the book and wanting to keep going on with the book even when I had to stop.

Say what you will about antiquated views on gender roles and the family, that’s not why I came to this book. I wanted a Western. I’d never really experienced the genre in literary form. L’Amour popped up in my searches. This did what I wanted it to: satisfied my craving for the lone gunman Western aesthetic while also further pushing me into the genre.

This is a book that’s not meant to be some grand piece of art or commentary. No massive cultural movements have this as their genesis. It’s a simple, well-executed story about a lonely man in the Arizona desert. Very nice.

To quote Tyra “it was so bad, I wanted to give you a 0. But I can’t do that. So I give you a 1.”

215 pages of “white men are awesome. Women are children. Natives are animals.” Even for 1953 when this was published…wow. There are plenty of stories written before this one that managed to not scream “all I know is racism” from cover to cover, but this one is not them. Hard no.
