read this for book club! easy to read but definitely not something i would usually pick up... not really a fan of the author's writing style. i enjoyed all the complex female characters, but some of it did feel performative and glossed over. i mean, it's going to be a challenge for a white woman to truly write something substantial from the POV of BIPOC/queer people... it was an earnest effort, but lacked a lot of nuance and sincerity because it's all experiences that she's describing secondhand. and one could probably argue that the identities assigned to the main characters were simply buzz labels to check off the representation boxes, but also this story would honestly be so boring if it was just about 2 white women. every single cheesy political/empowerment statement she made had to be spelled out for the reader, because i truly don't think she was confident enough in her portrayal of these women for readers to pick up on whatever message she was trying to put out there (rightfully so).  but seriously, why write the story at all if that was the case?

so much of the book was very much tell rather than show... was it supposed to feel like i was reading the memoir? with the writing style, that didn't feel very realistic... firstly, it felt one note between monique's inner monologue and the memoir parts, but is that supposed to be on purpose? the root of the issue is sort of that monique is described to be an incredible writer, which sadly the author did not deliver on. reid can write characters and a plot but news articles and think pieces may have been out of her depth, which really takes me out of the story. if this were an actual memoir of a famous person, i'd be so disappointed in the quality of writing lol

all of that to say that i did find this book entertaining, even if i did roll my eyes a bunch. it's fast paced and intriguing enough. idk if it needed that many plot twists, but i'll let her have those lmao

DID NOT FINISH

I got too stressed out by the one character lying about her job. It felt like unnecessary tension I couldn’t get past.

This book. I don’t even know where to start. It is truly a well written book. To create an store made up celebrity and her struggles and her love interests and you’re able to move the reader to tears it’s incredible. It’s a very easy read and you learn a great lesson. One of my favorite quotes from this book is “When you’re given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn’t give things, you take things”
Truly inspiring.

Decent beach read, just not the type of book that leaves me wanting more.
