ILL'd this on a whim based on some good reviews. I don't usually read thrillers or romances, and this is a combination of the two. The facts it also had a sense of humor and a strong foodie angle were what got my attention. It was fun and frothy, if forumula. Big reveals were not surprising. But they don't always have to be.

You have to get used to the weirdness of this book, liked the story though is not my “go to” genre.

3.5* rounded up to 4* for goodreads.

I kept telling myself I shouldn't be enjoying this book so much, but I wasn't very convincing! I mean, who is suppose to love a humorous book that's bloody, violent, and has a cold-blooded hitman for a hero and a crazy cook for a heroine? Not to mention the high body count. But I couldn't help laughing out loud, and I couldn't help liking the characters. But the book wouldn't have held up for me without a well-done mystery. What made this book un-put-down-able for me was the intricate, multi-layered mystery plot. It's been a long time since I've enjoy a whodunnit quite this much, or had one that kept me guessing as long. At first I thought the mystery would be a back-drop for the slapstick comedy, and didn't think I'd enjoy it. But it turns out the comedy and wackiness was played out around a truly interesting mystery.

Love it! Cranky Agnes has an anger management issue - she tends to hit the cheating men in her life with frying pans. Gotta love her! Then, people start trying to kidnap her dog and things get really interesting. A delightful story, filled with the South, the Mob, and flamingos! 083107

A quick and fun read that took me away from my world - exactly what I wanted.

On Monday, Agnes, is a food writer who kills an attempted dognapper. Her friend Joey has his nephew Shane take care of Little Agnes. Shane's a hitman and Agnes isn't a little girl. Meanwhile, Agnes needs to plan a Mafia wedding for Satruday.

Read this quite some time ago and am still recommending it today; apparently I need to reread it... No idea what happened to my copy, but I'm super ordering one from paperbackswap right now. :)

Jennifer Crusie is great for fun contemporary romances that don't get lost in cliche. Love the idea of teaming up with a man to write them- maybe that's why the male characters didn't get too gooey?

Ok first off be prepared for one hell of a wild ride when you read this. This is the best warning I can give you for this book.
It starts off somewhat slow and picks up around four or five chapters in. Then oh boy the action and cast of characters storm you, and yes at times bowl you over.
Agnes was sometimes too crazy for me to connect with. She doesn't exactly react to situations like a "normal" person would. Frying pans anyone? However, this could be why she was so fun to read about.
Shane was simply hot. Really. I sincerely feel throwing a lot of words out for a description would be a waste of time. He's hot, that's all there is to that. Read the book, read about him.
A key component of the book for me was how Shane kept doing little things for Agnes. Soooo completely thoughtful and sweet. When he took her To Do List and gets her a bridge (to hard to explain what that is all about) I melted. Mind you he is doing all this while he is dodging bullets, killing people in Agnes kitchen, and trying to complete his mission of killing Casey Dean. Yeah you could say the man has a full plate.
Agnes and Shane's first sex scene was hot, hot, hot. The angry sex was wow factor. Once again not for the faint of heart.
Towards the end the murder mystery and cast of characters gets a little convoluted. It was a little too much, could have trimmed some characters and story. Something should have went, either Casey Dean or the mob connections.
This isn't a traditional romance per say but for people who like action with a man/woman relationship thrown in will quite enjoy it. And there is of course Crusie's quirky humor thrown in, making it that much more enjoyable.
I seriously read this book in one sitting, once it gets going it is IMPOSSIBLE to put down. I was utterly absorbed into Shane and Agnes lives.
Super fun, super chaotic read, and definitely a keeper for me.

I just don't get the popularity of Jennifer Crusie. I have read several of her books and I did not find them to be funny or engaging. I wanted bodily harm to come to Agnes so the book would end. I didn't find Agnes to be likeable and didn't understand why I should care what happened to her.

Great mystery with good old fashion humor. Love how the heroine uses a frying pan to defend herself.
