Okay I want to preface this whole thing by saying Rebecca Kennedy is not a bad writer.
She wrote some amazing lines that are pretty profound in here and I genuinely got some delight out of reading this, especially the first half.

HOWEVER. This book took sheer willpower for me to read because I was SO mad. it was about 150-200 pages too long a trap many a romance book falls into. I found out that this was also published serially in chunk so I think that may have contributed to it.

My biggest critiques are the fact that for some reason, even if this is a villain love story, the ML is just kind of a dick rather than a villain. and our actual villains' are almost comical with how Dickensian and evil they are. They're all evil, horrible, irredeemable, and to add a lil flavor all sexual predators.

I feel personally that if it's a dark romance/villain romance you don't have to justify their actions by making the antagonist in the story a rapist.

Zoltan and Averil were not the protags for me. They felt a lil shallow by the end of the book I just couldn't bring myself to be truly invested in their whole deal. I truly found the side characters more interesting like Brixeus and the lil fish-man thruple and her sister Ylaine were very fun for me.

Overall the Spicy content was good with the exception of some cringe dirty talk I couldn't get past. Also I'm SO sorry but Zoltan is not a sexy name, I was hoping he'd just be the sea witch.

Honestly, and truly, I could've forgiven and been down with this story in most ways if they'd just kept the Sea Witch a woman. I feel like a lot of the comments on sexual repression and shame and purity would've hit so much harder and better if that had been the case. in Zoltan's mouth it just sounds like we're trying to crown him king of feminism and It hit some of my ick buttons.

Like I said honestly Kennedy is not a bad author, this book was just NOT made for me, so if none of what I said bothers you in the slightest please go for it and enjoy yourself

I really loved the concept and the writing of this one! Averill and Zoltan played off each other beautifully, and the new take on The Little Mermaid was original enough to make an interesting story. The action sequences felt a little weak compared to the romance, but otherwise, a delight to read.

Quick recap: Averil is a mermaid princess who loves the human world and all the things that they have, and after a rough storm she saves a human prince and falls for him. The sea Witch sees it and jumps on the opportunity to make a deal with her to help him get his revenge against the Mer king.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I loved how It took a story we all know and made it it’s own thing entirely. I didn’t have super high expectations, and I wasn’t sure what to expect from the story, but it managed to surprise me with a really interesting plot. The characters arcs in this story were really well done and I especially liked seeing the Sea Witches growth, as well as Averil’s. I might be a big fan of stories where characters learn things aren’t always as they seem to be, and this book delivered on that!

It was also so much fun and that was the best part for me, and I very much enjoyed this and recommend it to you!

The idea is nice but the book itself is kinda boring. The characters are shallow and the writing is too plain for my taste.

A spicy retelling with an excellent plot and plenty of “teach me” moments for my praise kink girlies. 10/10

“Stop focusing on the soup,” I snap. “Pay attention to the prince. Men like women who focus solely on them.”

“But I want to eat, she whines. It’s so delicious. Have you tasted soup before?”

“Of course. Many kinds.”

“There are many kinds? Oh my gods. I want to try them all.”

The corner of my mouth twitches up. Furious, I slap my own face, hard. Difficult to do underwater, but it’s a necessary personal chastisement.
