A Little Mermaid retelling? You have my attention...

I was hooked right from the start of this book. Averil is a mermaid who rescues a human prince from a shipwreck one night. She thinks that she heard the Soul Echo with him, meaning that he is her one true mate - even though her father would not approve since he hates all humans. Wanting to be near the prince, she makes a deal with the Sea Witch. She gives him her voice, and she gets legs. In return, she must do him a favor when the time comes.

Averil is very inexperienced, not only in the human department, but the man and ~love~ department as well. Under her father's rule, no mermaids "play" around with each other, they save that for their one true mate. However, the prince doesn't believe in these sorts of rule, so the Sea Witch starts to teach Averil about her new body, and the things she can do with it, if you catch my drift.

The story then unfolds in your typical Little Mermaid fashion, but with some spicy scenes (including the tentacles 👀) and some more action and suspense added in. I'm a sucker for fairytale retellings, and this was another great one.

Overall this book was unsatisfying. Not many likeable characters and a flippant approach to some heavy themes. Some parts were a little funny.

For a little mermaid retelling I actually really liked this. It followed the source material and then when a little further into things after surpassing the original. I liked the extension into getting the kingdoms set up to run better and I enjoyed the romantic stuff. All you can eat soup is a little silly but let’s be real- a book about merpeople doing it is generally a little silly. I think a few times I was thinking the sentence structures were a little repetitive but generally I enjoyed the vibes of this book!
