A classic by Asimov that I had never heard of. Tells the story of the bureaucrats of Eternity, the keepers of human Reality who make Reality Changes based upon mathematical computations that will ensure the greatest utilitarian results for future generations. As such they are constantly changing or even eliminating people’s lives, but all for the greater good (you can see how Marvel’s TVA takes from this concept). The crux of the story is Harlan, a Technician who is gifted at making these Reality Changes, but who meets a woman with whom he falls in love. The story asks the question about mediocrity and safety vs risk and greatness. If we eliminate suffering or hardship, we also eliminate potential, and ultimately survival.

O livro começa muito bem, apresentando várias questões da Eternidade e seu funcionamento. O livro sofre ali por uns 50% com alguns problemas, como: exposição e problemas que poderiam ser evitados por comunicação. Também parece sofrer de misoginia, o autor tenta dar uma desculpa esfarrapada, mas ele até usa como gatilho pra história. O personagem principal também começa a virar um mala, mas tudo bem, um personagem não precisa ser legal pra ser interessante.
Apesar disso, o começo e o final do livro se pagam. Os últimos 20% são sensacionais! As duas últimas frases do livro fecham ele de maneira incrível.
