This was a nicely paced novel centered around a young Black journalist, Meghan McKenzie, who decides to travel to Alabama to discover the truth of her great grandfather’s murder in light of another police brutality incident. Featuring a dual timeline, I enjoyed the way the author switched back in forth between the past and present day, favoring the chapters of the past a little more. I thought the author did a wonderful job of showcasing that while time may have changed and things are certainly a lot different, there are still hood wearers among us, especially in positions of power like the police force. There were a few things I could’ve done without like the romance, felt it was just sprinkled in and not really needed to move the plot along. That aside, I think the story as a whole was a great read. I love a good historical fiction and this one had some mystery/suspense elements to it that I really enjoyed.

5 ⭐ rating...When I tell you this story was amazingly good. It was such a mystery and a thrill.
Meghan was determined to solve the mystery of who murdered her Great-Grandfather.
When I tell you this story made me shed some tears once Meghan found out everything.
A beautiful story about family history. The injustice African Americans had to go through during the Jim Crow era.
This story was crafted so beautifully especially how it went between two time periods to give insight on both perspectives.
Definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction and mysteries.

This engaging novel is told through alternating perspectives and time lines. Ultimately, the two converge beautifully. Mystery lovers might especially enjoy this book as the writing has a mystery-feel to it. The audio was very well done.
