The story was conceptually very interesting, I very much wanted to know the ending. The writing style was also interesting, both literary and mater-of-fact.
I really enjoyed this one.

A very enthusiastic pick! Head knows EXACTLY where to cut a chapter so that you keep turning the page. Both timelines were incredibly strong and well-paced. My only criticism is that there was some dull filler that should have been cut.

This was difficult to listen to at times. The stories of racism, neglect, and abuse were tough knowing that these issues haven't changed in over 100 years.

This book followed a dual timeline of Lee who was a Black man living in Birmingham, Alabama 1929 and was murdered and his great-granddaughter Meghan who is a journalist in 2019 and is trying to understand what happened to her great-grandfather.
It was a beautiful testament to the ties of family and highlighted the racism present in the 1920s in Birmingham as well as issues still present today. The dual timelines of this story really added to the anticipation of what was unfolding. I especially appreciated how Head talked about police in this book. Not all police were villains and there was a clear line between good cops and bad cops.
My only complaint was that some of the relationships between characters seemed to go deep very quickly which didn't seem plausible if you had just met someone.

My thoughts:
This historical fiction (based on the author’s real family history) had my interest at the prologue! I loved everything about this story: the very short chapters, how the author switch from the past to present, the story told in Robert’s voice (even after death), friends coming to the aid of Robert’s family when he could not take care of them, Robert “standing between two worlds” to help his family and so much more. This could not have been an easy story for Ms. Head, but it was so beautifully written and hopefully somehow therapeutic for her as well.
I highly recommend this book! It was a
5 ⭐for me!
