The first half was excellent - really engaging, I loved the characters and the backdrop of the circus train was surreal and magical in a way that made the foreground plot really pop. Then once that portion of the book was over the plot really lost it's way. The last quarter of the book was far longer than necessary and the ending felt a bit bland after such a strong start. Overall it was engaging and I'm glad I finished it but it's the first half that will stick in my imagination for a long time to come.
Two things about me is I loveee circuses and I love WWII historical fictions so was this book made for me specifically?
What a delightful story! The Circus Train is full of wonder, history and adventure with such interesting and lovable characters. You will not be able to put this one down till you know the plight of poor Lena (who is in a wheelchair), her father Theo and Alexandre the boy who has no home. From the beginning scenes of the unique circus to the concentration camps of WWII we watch as Lena grows into an amazing young lady against all odds while Theo and Alexandre go through their own trials to survive. If you enjoy Historical Fiction with a little fantasy thrown in then I highly recommend The Circus Train. You will remember Lena and Alexandre long after the last page is turned.
