Solid character development, but this one took a little too long to grab me for my liking. I was considering a DNF at about 40%, but finally found myself engaged at 50%. For me at least, there was just something missing — though I'm hard-pressed to define what. It's definitely light on circus life, which had the potential to be a compelling character in itself.

Reading 2023
Book 28: The Circus Train by Amita Parikh

Read this book for my IRL book club.

I enjoyed all of the descriptions of the trains and the circus. Also enjoyed that the book did not take a detour through WWII, but stuck with the characters and their stories. My rating 3.75⭐️.

This book falls victim to trying to do too much. Had the author focused on just 1-2 of the threads running through this, I think it would have been an impressive novel. Instead, some storylines felt rushed or underbaked.

This does have a lot of lesser known WWII history, which is always great to see. There is also great disability rep!

If you like a lil romance with your historical fiction, I think you’d like this.
