I wanted to like this historical fiction from a Canadian author, but it was terrible. It lacked depth in every way, from the history to the characters and relationships. There was no nuance, with every thought, feeling, and motive of each character spelled out at all times. It read like a YA, but I don’t think it’s supposed to be. I stopped and skimmed the last half, confirming that it never did redeem itself and continued to be cliched and predictable. Just skip this one!

This book is a few things: circus story, chronicle of wartime survival, family drama, coming of age story, and romance. The best parts of it, in my opinion, are associated with the family drama and romance, though the other ideas work well too. The author's note at the end was an excellent addition and gave context to much of the story, so don't skip over reading it.

This book was amazing!! It took you through the difficult life of dealing with the after-effects and struggles of someone that dealt with polio at a young age while travelling with a circus that eventually travels through Europe during WWII. This book is full of enough emotions to have you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. It's that good. Definitely another 5-star read!
