um…what. the WACKEST backstory retcon. like almost worse than the scarlet witch and quicksilver backstory retcon. what even was the point of this. i’m going to choose to ignore this.

Hmm. While there isn't anything necessarily wrong with Made in the USA-- the writing, art, story all work internally--I'm just not a fan of what this does to America Chavez's character. The retconning of her background is bogus, not only because it breaks the character, but also because the route they chose is so unimaginative.
SpoilerSecret lab experimentation with kidnapped sick kids leads to genetic mutations and superpowers, yawn. We've seen it!! I liked magical lesbians from another universe better. It also doesn't even make sense; at the end, America is hanging up a framed news clipping about her human Earth-616 mothers... wouldn't that have shown up in the research when America was telling everyone about her backstory? Their names weren't even different!
I did appreciate the addition of America's foster family, the Santanas. Anyway, if this is your first foray into America Chavez's story, you might enjoy this series, but I'd highly suggest starting with Young Avengers or Gabby Rivera's run instead.

TW: memory loss, arson, institutionalization, terminal illness, illegal scientific experimentation of minors

listen. the art is stunning, and the writing isn't bad per se. just. the retconning is so unnecessary?? i feel like you can go so much deeper into america as a character without changing her entire back story. the 2017 run set that up wonderfully, i don't really get why they chose to change all that here.

America Chavez has quickly become one of my favorite Marvel characters between this and her run in Young Avengers. I feel this run helped add more depth to her by showing us some of the people important in her life and exploring her repressed trauma. But that trauma part is a double edged sword. This story retcons her origin and I don't particularly like this new origin.

Not only is it less interesting than her old one, it creates a few plotholes for Young Avengers. If she isn't from another dimension, how tf did she know who the demiurge was? Why did her moms come back in YA the way she remembered them instead of how they actually were? I think that instead of completely retconning her origin, it should've just enriched the one she already had. We could've still had the experiment stuff and her sister, just have it take place in the Utopian Parallel dimension.

Outside of YA, this is a pretty good story though. It creates plotholes and the origin is less interesting, but it's still a fun read with good characterization and some amazing art!

There's something incredibly sad in taking away a character's origin story not just by pretending it never happened, but by in-story saying that was a myth a child came up with to cope with reality. I get it, but I loved the old origin story, and this one makes less sense. Her relationship with her girlfriend is kind of awkward and reads like someone not comfortable with writing queer relationships. Also, **spoilers** but her sister drops into a portal and then we just don't address that at all for several pages, until a one sentence 'and also i should try to find her' mention.
