2.5 stars. If the rest of the book had stayed in the same vein as the first chapter, it could've been a good book. Yet you get a crime and military story with a few ghosts thrown in.

A delightful southern small town horror story with just the right amount of supernatural elements. The characters, with names like Coker, Merle and Moochie, are lovely, even when they are evil. Fast-paced and fun, with great dialogue and a wonderful setting, this was a nice surprise. There is a large cast of characters to keep track of, and lots of questions remain after the ending, so a sequel would be great. Wait, what? There is one? Yay!

I put this book on hold at the library and was SO EXCITED when it finally arrived. I'd read good reviews about it and I was really excited to discover a new author.

Sadly, the book is a mess. It's all over the place and reads more like a collection of short stories that may or may not come together at the end--who knows, I couldn't finish it. Read about 30% of it and gave up. There were too many characters and I couldn't keep any of them straight let alone feel invested in ANY of it.

Damn disappointing.

So many characters. I normally don’t mind that but somehow it didn’t work here. At some point almost every named character has inner monologue revealed or goes into some depth, which is tough because this is about an entire town! As an audiobook, it was a little difficult to keep the characters straight towards the middle of the book as well. I will not be recommending this book to anyone, but instead I’d recommend So Cold the River by Michael Koryta, an excellent Southern American (ok well, Indiana) mystery thriller with a supernatural twist.

Not sure if it was the mediocre narration of the audiobook or if the writing is really that bad, but I gave up on this some 4 hours in. Uninteresting characters and gratuitous violence. No thanks.
