I have my critiques of both Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe, and I do not believe either of them are perfect, but this book is.

They belonged to a generation in which all great artists and recognizable names were acquainted, connected, and highly influenced by each other, and yet their friendship stands above all the others. This is a story of soul mates who happen to be artists.

Makes me want to be a starving artist. So sad, so romantic, so idealistic.. one of my favorite books.
