Nothing against the content, just not my favourite book. Would be a great read for someone exploring gender identity. Give a lot of great advice without being prescriptive

"Some people are born in the mountains, while some people are born by the sea.
Some people are happy to live in the place they were born, while others must make a journey to reach the climate in which they can flourish and grow.
Between the ocean and the mountains is a wild forest. That is where I want to make my home"
While I always love a memoir, especially written by a queer person, this one is definitely one of my favourites - I've read it twice in 2 months.
Gender Queer follows the author's life from eir first memories of encounters with gender, to reading fanfiction and ultimately figuring out that e are non-binary and asexual as well as what that means to em.
I loved how this graphic novel was written, I feel like it is accessible to someone no matter their current knowledge of gender identities and sexualities. The author has managed to challenge common misunderstandings in a soft yet firm way that doesn't necessarily stick out or feel preachy.
I really enjoyed how the author showed how difficult it is not having words for your experiences and the nuances between not being percieved as a man nor woman in a binary society.
I also enjoyed the other aspects of this book, such as other life experiences, making friends, reconnecting, joy, familial relationships and health (as well as the interconnectedness of it all).
There were a couple of things that didn't sit right for me.
The first and most obvious are the multiple references to Harry Potter. Yes, this has been a part of many people's lives but the author has done SO MUCH harm to the trans community. I would have appreciated at least a note acknowledging this, as it was well-known at the time of publication.
The other was a conflation between disability and hating yourself - the author is having a conversation with eir mum about how e feel about eir gender:
"I don't hate my body. I don't have chronic pain or any of the other health issues so many of my friends deal with"
While this isn't necessarily problematic, it just settled very uncomfortably for me as a disabled person with chronic pain - being disabled doesn't mean I hate myself or my body, and you don't have to be disabled to hate your body.
I borrowed this from my library, but might just buy my own copy.
